Struggle is a common thing that comes with learning how to ski. The two most important words when learning are pizza and french fries. Pizza referring to positioning the skis into the shape of a pizza helping to slow down. And french fries referring to keep skis straight, helping to speed up. I assumed that I would be able to figure it out myself no problem.
My first run on skis was a blue (medium) at Mount Snow in Vermont. I was used to snowboarding double blacks (most difficult) in Michigan. So I thought that a blue would be fine. I realized about halfway down it was not. A blue there was about equivalent to a double black in Michigan. I could not figure out how to control my skis, I felt like taking off my skis and walking down instead.
After countless yard sales (falling and losing both skis and poles) I eventually got the hang of it. And was worth it in the end. If I were to do it all over and learn again I definitely would have got a lesson, I feel as if it would have helped me improve much quicker.
Do yourself a favor and do not waste time trying to learn yourself, just get a lesson.
